Marriage Announcement Index

The Marriage Announcement Index is drawn from notices posted in Uniontown’s Republican Standard (“RS”) and Genius of Liberty (“GL”) newspapers, largely from the mid to late 1800s. Most of the marriages took place in Fayette County between Fayette County residents, but not always.

The information in this database was originally typed onto index cards by PA Room volunteers. For ease of navigation, some information was excluded from this online table, including the residences of the brides and grooms, the page/column information for the announcements, and miscellaneous notes. If you are interested in this information, please contact us at [email protected].

For tips on using the Index, scroll down beneath the table.

Tips and Tricks

When using the Marriage Announcement Index, try the following:

  • Use the Search Box in the upper right corner to enter a keyword. For example, “Elizabeth” will return all rows with the name “Elizabeth” appearing in it. You can even enter a few letters to widen the results. (ex. “liz” will return “Elizabeth,” “Eliza,” “Lizzie,” etc.) At this time, the table does not support wildcards.
  • Click the column headers (ex. “Surname (Bride)”) to sort the data by that column.
  • To see more entries at once, use the dropdown in the upper left corner to make up to 100 rows visible.

Database Notes

Please be advised that errors may have been introduced into this database during the original transcription or data entry processes. Researchers are encouraged to verify the information they find by seeking the original marriage announcements, marriage licenses, and so on.

If you notice an error, you are welcome to let us know by sending a message (and preferably, documentation to provide correct dates/names/etc.) to [email protected]. We will update the database as time permits.
